The WCLC trains volunteer tutors to work with low-literacy level adults and children in and around Winnebago County. These tutors, along with our instructors, help teach the programs listed below.

WCLC teaches skills that will improve the ability to communicate. We offer classes and individual tutors for each learner. Our services are provided free of charge. Pre-registration is required.

English Class 1

This course provides an overview of beginning English-speaking skills.  The use of phonics and word building skills is highlighted.  Conversational skills are emphasized.  An overview of cultural expressions and customs are described.  Information related to neighborhoods,  families and keeping in touch through communication will be addressed.

English Class 2

This course builds on English-speaking and writing skills.  Understanding pronouns, prepositions and the use of verbs used is highlighted. Information related to transportation, cost of items while shopping, banking, and understanding feelings and health care access will be addressed.  Information related to employment skills, continuing education, and personal health and legal issues in today’s world will be addressed.

Family Literacy

This course provides an opportunity for parents to increase their English Literacy skills with their children. There are three components to this course: child instruction, parent instruction, and child/parent interaction. Focus areas include preparing children for academic success, parents as teachers, understanding child’s school, and meeting personal learning goals.

Homework assistance is offered to ELL learners attending Fox Valley Technical College needing support outside of the classroom.

One-to-One Tutoring Program

The One-to-One Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Learning (ELL) program matches volunteer tutors with adult learners who are struggling with the fundamentals of reading, writing and/or speaking English, by providing private tutoring in a safe learning environment. We help our learners advance their skill level in pursuit of personal literacy goals, while using assessments, appropriate curriculum, and targeted reporting to monitor progress, ensuring their individual success.

Road to Work for Refugees and Immigrants

Assists, guides, and provides refugees and immigrants with vocational literacy training to help them obtain employment and utilize their skills and potential in the workforce.
